Zero Plastic Initiative at Ibeno Beach: How SHADEF and YALI Are Leading the Fight Against Plastic Pollution in Nigeria

Over the weekend, a transformative environmental action took place on the scenic shores of Ibeno Beach, Akwa Ibom State. The Safe Space Development Foundation (SHADEF), in a powerful collaboration with the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), hosted a large-scale clean-up and community engagement event themed:
“Zero Plastic Initiative: Preserving Ibeno Beach for a Sustainable Future.”
A Call to Action: Combating Plastic Waste
The event began with a comprehensive evaluation of plastic waste levels on the beach. Volunteers and environmental advocates quickly moved into action, launching a clean-up exercise where they actively collected and properly disposed of heaps of plastic litter scattered along the coast.
This hands-on effort not only restored beauty to Ibeno Beach but also amplified awareness around the devastating environmental impact of plastic pollution, especially on marine life and local ecosystems.
Empowering Minds Through Education and Advocacy
The clean-up was followed by an engaging public lecture session featuring inspiring keynote speakers:
- Lucy Eyo, representing Evelyn Eyo, Executive Director of SHADEF
- Akan James, a distinguished Mandela Washington Fellow 2024
Their presentations struck a deep chord with attendees as they emphasized:
- The urgent need to reduce plastic use
- The severe effects of plastic waste on oceans and wildlife
- The power of individual and collective action
- How innovative recycling and upcycling of plastics can become viable income-generating ventures
More Than a Clean-Up: Building a Movement
The event was more than just about picking up trash—it was about inspiring change. With laughter, smiles, shared experiences, and meaningful networking, attendees left empowered to take climate-conscious actions in their communities.
This event served as a powerful reminder:
Sustainability begins with us, but it grows through collaboration.
SHADEF’s Commitment to Environmental Change
This beach clean-up marks another milestone in SHADEF’s ongoing mission to foster community-led, environmentally sustainable development. By merging youth leadership, education, and local action, SHADEF and its partners are building a cleaner, greener Nigeria—one community at a time.
