In a bold stride towards environmental education and sustainable practices, Independence High School in Essien Udim recently witnessed the establishment and inauguration of the Young Environmentalists Club (YEs). This initiative, spearheaded by the Safe Space Development Foundation (SHADEF), aims to actively engage young minds in the critical discourse of environmental conservation.
A Transformative Inaugural Ceremony
The inaugural ceremony, a beacon of inspiration, featured an insightful lecture delivered by SHADEF’s Executive Director, Evelyn Eyo. Students were enlightened about the profound impacts of climate change, with a specific focus on issues such as plastic pollution, gas flaring, oil spillage, and excessive energy consumption. Notable guests from the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr. Emeti Attai and Mrs. Helen Ekpe, added valuable insights, setting the stage for a future of informed environmental stewardship.
Birth of the YEs Club
The Young Environmentalists Club was officially inaugurated by Mr. Emeti Attai, with an impressive 77 students expressing their keen interest in joining. Esther Ubak, a SHADEF team member, showcased creative ways to repurpose waste and recycle plastics effectively, aligning with the club’s mission to educate students on sustainable practices during monthly meetings.
Nurturing Environmental Leaders
Structured to convene once a month, the YEs Club’s agenda is rich and diverse. Club activities will include teachings by resource personnel, excursions, inter-school debates, recycling initiatives, hands-on learning sessions, pet projects, and creative activities. The club will be supervised by Mr. Dan Paul, the geography teacher, supported by a dedicated team of student executives in key roles.
