In a landmark event on February 16th, the Safe Space Development Foundation (SHADEF) spearheaded an impactful awareness program at Royalty Special College, Uyo. This initiative centered on climate change education and the establishment of the Young Environmentalists Club (YEs Club), aiming to instill environmental consciousness and proactive engagement among students.
Comrade Evelyn Eyo, Director of SHADEF, led the enlightening session at Royalty Special College, which commenced with a warm welcome from the school’s administration. Delving into the complexities of climate change, Comrade Eyo emphasized environmental accountability and proposed actionable solutions to address climate justice issues. She shed light on the detrimental effects of climate change-induced phenomena such as oil pollution, gas flaring, and plastic contamination, urging students to adopt sustainable practices for a cleaner, healthier future.
The session witnessed vibrant discussions and active participation from students, demonstrating their keen understanding and enthusiasm for environmental stewardship. Following the enlightening discourse, the Young Environmentalists Club (YEs Club) was formally established, garnering the enthusiastic involvement of 30 students. Under the guidance of the school’s Geography teacher, who assumed leadership as the Head of the club, a dedicated team of student executives was appointed to oversee its activities.
Scheduled to convene every second Friday of the month, club meetings will feature hands-on projects and educational sessions aimed at nurturing a culture of environmental consciousness and action. Comrade Evelyn Eyo presided over the inauguration of the YEs Club, charging its members with the responsibility to implement measures ensuring a clean and serene environment free from plastics and waste.
