YES CLUB: Safe Space Development Foundation (Shadef) conducted an awareness and sensitization program at Community Secondary School, Mbak Etoi, focusing on climate change education and the establishment of the Young Environmentalists Club (YEs Club). The initiative aimed at sensitizing students on environmental issues and foster proactive engagement in sustainability efforts.
Upon arrival, the team from Shadef, led by Executive Director, Comrade Evelyn Eyo, was warmly received by the school’s Principal, Vice Principal, and teaching staff. Mr. Emeti Attai and Mrs. Enobong Williams from the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals were also present to show solidarity and support in the event.
YES CLUB: Awareness and Sensitization Session
Comrade Evelyn Eyo delivered an insightful session on climate change, emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship and climate justice. She elucidated the impact of climate change-induced phenomena such as oil pollution, gas flaring, and plastic pollution, urging students to embrace sustainable practices for a cleaner, healthier future. Engaging discussions ensued, with students demonstrating excellent understanding and active participation.
YES CLUB: Intervention and Contribution
As part of the intervention, Shadef donated waste bins to facilitate recycling efforts within the school premises, enhancing its cleaning system. The principal expressed gratitude for the contribution, recognizing its significance in promoting environmental responsibility among students.
Establishment of the YEs Club
Following the awareness session, the Young Environmentalists Club (YEs Club) was officially established, garnering enthusiastic participation from 123 students. Mr. Ime-Abasi Ubong, the Geography teacher, was appointed to assume leadership as the Head of the YEs Club, with a dedicated team of student executives appointed to oversee its activities. Club meetings are scheduled to take place on the second Wednesday of every month, featuring hands-on projects and educational sessions.
Inauguration Ceremony
Mr. Emeti, representing the Honourable Commissioner from the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals, inaugurated the YEs Club, commending the school and Shadef for their collaborative efforts in promoting environmental consciousness. Mrs. Williams underscored the importance of environmental cleanliness, encouraging students to take proactive measures in preserving their surroundings.
